DOCUMENT ACCESSIBILITY / PDF REMEDIATION

ACCESSIBLE PDFs.
Readable by everyone.

A PDF can look perfect and still be unreadable for someone using a screen reader. Our PDF remediation service fixes your documents so headings, reading order, images, tables, links and forms make sense to assistive technology — and we show you the checks we ran.

01 / WHY IT MATTERS

DOCUMENTS THAT
include everyone.

01

Structure, not just looks

We tag every heading, paragraph, list, table and figure, and set the reading order so a screen reader follows the document the way a sighted reader does.

02

Images and data explained

Charts, photos and diagrams get meaningful alternative text; tables get proper headers so each figure can be understood in context.

03

Proof of the work

Each document is checked with PAC (the PDF/UA checker) and tested with a screen reader. You receive a report of what was fixed and what was verified.

FOR ORGANISATIONS THAT PUBLISH DOCUMENTS FOR THE PUBLIC.

Universities & schools

Syllabi, course materials, research papers and student forms.

Public bodies & nonprofits

Reports, guides, application forms and information leaflets.

Companies & healthcare

Annual reports, handbooks, patient guides and customer documents.

FROM YOUR PDFs to documents everyone can use.

  1. 01

    Send your batch

Upload the final PDFs (and Word or InDesign sources if you have them) and tell us which ones matter most.

  2. 02

    We review the batch

We confirm page counts, flag scanned pages or complex forms and agree the order of work.

  3. 03

    Remediation & checks

Tags, reading order, alt text, tables, forms and metadata, then PAC checks and a screen reader pass on every file.

  4. 04

    Receive files & report

Remediated PDFs plus a report per document. One correction round is included if you spot anything.

WHAT YOU RECEIVE.

01

Remediated PDFs

Your documents, visually unchanged, with a complete and correct tag structure.

02

Check report

For each file: what was fixed, PAC results and the screen reader test, ready to share with your compliance team.

03

Alt text record

The alternative text written for each image, so your team can reuse it in web pages and future editions.

BEFORE WE START.

  • The final PDFs. If a document is still being edited, send it when it is final.
  • Source files (Word, InDesign) if available: they make the result cleaner.
  • Your accessibility target: PDF/UA, WCAG 2.1 or 2.2 AA, Section 508 or EN 301 549.
  • Descriptions for technical images or charts, if their meaning is specialised.
  • A contact person to answer questions about content.

Remediation and testing, not legal certification.

We remediate against PDF/UA and the WCAG success criteria that apply to PDF and document the checks we ran. We do not issue legal certificates or guarantee compliance with a specific law or contract. Content rewriting, translation and OCR of scanned documents are quoted separately.

Before you order

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED. Before you need to ask.

Is an automated checker enough?

No. Tools like Acrobat's checker or PAC catch technical errors, but not whether the reading order makes sense or whether alt text is meaningful. That is why every document also gets a manual screen reader test.

Which standards do you follow?

We work to PDF/UA (ISO 14289) and the WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA criteria that apply to PDF, which also cover Section 508 and EN 301 549 requirements for documents. Tell us your target in the brief.

Will my documents look different?

No. Remediation works on the structure underneath. The visual layout stays the same unless something has to change for contrast or readability, and we ask first.

Can you fix scanned PDFs?

Scanned pages first need OCR and a careful text check, which takes more time. We quote scanned documents separately so the batch price stays fair.

Can you fix the source files instead?

Yes, and for documents you publish every year that is the best investment. The Organisation batch includes an accessible source template for your next reports.

How are pages counted?

Every page in the batch counts, including covers and blank pages. A 12-page PDF and a 38-page PDF together are 50 pages.
